Applications of Electric Discharge Machining (EDM) Machines
The electrical discharge machining (EDM) machine tool is a special processing machine that uses the principle of electrical discharge machining to process conductive materials. It is also known as an electro-erosion machine tool. EDM machine tools are mainly used for machining various high-hardness materials (such as hard alloys and hardened steel) and complex-shaped molds and parts, as well as for cutting, grooving, and removing broken tools (such as drill bits and taps) from workpiece holes.

The working principle of an electrical discharge machining (EDM) machine tool.
When the electrical discharge machining (EDM) machine is performing electrical discharge machining, the tool electrode and the workpiece are connected to the two poles of a pulse power supply and are immersed in a working fluid, or the working fluid is filled into the discharge gap. The automatic control system manages the feed of the tool electrode towards the workpiece. When the gap between the two electrodes reaches a certain distance, the pulse voltage applied to the two electrodes will break down the working fluid, resulting in spark discharge.

What is an electrical discharge machining (EDM) machine?
Electrical discharge machining (EDM) is a type of machine tool that uses the principle of electrical discharge to erode the surface of metal parts. Because the principle of electrical discharge machining differs from that of conventional metal cutting, EDM machines have a different structure compared to regular metal cutting machines.

Electrical discharge machining (EDM) methods for machine tools.
Electric discharge machining (EDM) machines can be roughly divided into four categories: 1. The first category is mainly used for processing various molds, cavities, and holes, which accounts for about 80% of all EDM machines; 2. The second category is wire-cut EDM machines, used for cutting parts and processing punching molds; 3. The third category includes EDM machines that have both linear feed motion and rotational motion of the tool electrode relative to the workpiece, such as EDM boring and thread grinding; 4. The fourth category consists of EDM machines that can perform surface treatment on workpieces, such as electric discharge engraving.
The structure and components of an electrical discharge machining (EDM) machine.
The bed and column of the electrical discharge machining (EDM) machine tool form a fundamental structure that ensures the relative position between the electrode, worktable, and workpiece. The accuracy of these components directly affects the machining process; if the machine tool's precision is not high, it is difficult to guarantee machining accuracy.

The precision control and assurance of electrical discharge machining largely depend on positioning accuracy.
Electrical discharge machining (EDM) is an important process method in mold manufacturing, especially playing a crucial role in the production of injection molds. Currently, many mold companies still have insufficient process levels, and some misconceptions in the process often lead to the EDM of mold parts not meeting the required precision and efficiency.
